A Heart Strangely Warmed

An article in the Augusta Chronicle highlights conversions from one faith to another or one tradition to another. Yours truly was included in those who have had their heart 'strangely warmed' to move to another expression of Christ's Body.

Have you been warmed? Have you moved?

Why?

I made the agonizing decision to leave my home church (Disciples of Christ) when I was sixteen. The world can be an especially confusing place at that age and I turned to the church for answers. Unfortunately, what I got was a Sunday school teacher with a social agenda and a preacher with aspirations to make a name for himself in the community. I window shopped for a little while, but I wasn’t finding that spiritual connection that I craved. On a whim, I decided to try the Episcopal Church. Despite the fact that I was completely lost for the first 15 minutes (and it must have been obvious, because the lady across the aisle moved next to me and acted as my guide), I felt strangely at peace. I kept coming back and it wasn’t long before I felt comfortable enough to start asking the same questions that had prompted my exit from the other church. To my relief I wasn’t just brushed aside, but I wasn’t given canned answers either. I was challenged to study and to meditate and to pray. “This is a thinking person’s church,” Father B told me. That was twenty-five years ago and I’m still enjoying the challenge.
